- "Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were Elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life."
- —Saruman
Orcs are vile beasts, ruined Men, Elves and Dwarves that have been corrupted by the powers of Melkor and later Sauron. They are the basis of most evil armies in Middle-earth (especially in Mordor and the Misty Mountains). When left to their own devices, orcs would usually split into separate tribes and fight against each other while raiding other villages in the process. They were undisciplined and badly armed, able to be fought off by most soldiers of Men, Elves or Dwarves. It took a powerful overlord (for example: Morgoth and Sauron) or a strong chieftain (for example: Azog and Bolg) to unite the orc tribes and let them show their full strength in war against the Free Peoples. However, they were still classed as inferior compared to the Easterlings and Haradrim.
