"'There lies the fastness of Southern Mirkwood,' said Haldir. 'It is clad in a forest of dark fir, where the trees strive one against another and their branches rot and wither. In the midst upon a stony height stands Dol Guldur, where long the hidden Enemy had his dwelling. We fear that now it is inhabited again, and with power sevenfold. A black cloud lies often over it of late. "
The Fellowship of the Ring

The Dol Guldur fortress was Sauron's base of operations before he revealed himself to Middle-earth. During this time, he was known as the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.

Dol Guldur is one of the special outposts of Mordor in Edain Mod. It poisons enemies near it.

Strategy[]

Like the Minas Morgul outpost fortress, the Dol Guldur counterpart is a special structure that trains special units, holds territory, and produces extra resources for the war effort. Like the Minas Morgul outpost which weakens enemies, the Dol Guldur outpost continuously poisons nearby enemies, making it difficult to assault except from a great distance with expensive siege machines..

The elite foot soldiers that can be trained here are all orcs, but there are some Mirkwood Spiders available as well. Every one of these soldiers shares something in common; their attacks poison enemy units, and when an enemy unit is poisoned, it takes extra damage and takes poison damage over time. The orcs that are recruited here are for making massive offensive pushes by dealing immense damage that Mordor Orcs can't even imitate. Combined with other elite units from Minas Morgul and Cirith Ungol, they are a dangerous force. As for the Mirkwood Spiders, they too poison enemy units, but they have a peculiar function as battalions of their own. For instance, they move quickly and so are effective at destroying heavy infantry. At the same time, surrounding cavalry are slowed down much faster, and are severely weakened when nearby these spiders. As both heavy infantry and cavalry are excellent defensive units, Mirkwood Spiders are especially useful for besieging enemy fortresses. Best of all, under the influence of Sauron, this citadel can recruit them for free!

The heroic battalion that this outpost recruits are the Castellans. These are soulbound robes and armor brought to life to serve wicked ends, and they function as immensely powerful tanks, built to soak damage and deal damage in great amounts each. They can slay a great number of enemy units by draining the life of the ground in which they walk, poisoning all enemy units that tread on it. Then, when the time is right, they release the drained life force for a huge boost to both armor and damage. Marching alongside the Nazgul on-foot, the Castellans will draw a lot of the enemy's attention, only to wipe them all out in the name of Sauron. Speaking of Nazgul, the Dol Guldur fortress itself can recruit one, Khamul, to serve Mordor as a special hero unit.
