- "Gil-galad was an Elven king,
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.
His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.
But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are." - —The Fall of Gil-galad, translated by Bilbo and recited by Sam, The Fellowship of the Ring
Gil-galad was the son of Fingon who became the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth after the death of Turgon. He dwelt in Lindon after the end of the First Age and befriended Elendil when he arrived from Númenor. He marched on Sauron with Elendil and his sons, Isildur and Anarion, as well as a mighty army known as the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. None of the hosts of Mordor could withstand Gil-galad's spear, Aeglos, but he was finally slain along with Elendil on the slopes of Mount Doom after fierce combat with Sauron. He and Elendil were avenged by Isildur, who cut the Ring from Sauron's hand.
Gil-galad had two Elven Rings of Power in his possession which were passed on to Cirdan and Elrond, Gil-galad's herald. Both were with Gil-galad when he died. He can summoned by using the spellbook power Last Alliance.
