The Orc Pikemen were created by the Edain Mod to replace Easterlings which previously served as the basic pikemen for Mordor, serving now as their elite ones. They are stronger than the Orc Warriors but cost more. They are still weak in comparison to the other pikemen of the game but should be used if needed. Later on it is better to introduce pikemen from one of the sub-factions of Minas Morgul or Dol Guldur since they have particular bonuses that make them more useful. Like all orcs they can be boosted with various powers and abilities which make them stronger, but Mass Slayer Heroes will make quick work of them.
Flank Defence - Pikemen are used to defending from all sides when battling against monsters and cavalry. As a result, they cannot be flanked. They take no extra damage from being flanked and deal full revenge damage regardless of the direction they get trampled from.
Crack the Whip (with Orc Overseer) - For 30 seconds deal twice the damage against Cavalry and slows them down twice as much units but lose 25% armor.
The Orc Pikemen have access to the following upgrade:
Banner Carrier - This upgrade can only be given to a level 1 battalion and will promote it to level 2. At level 2 the battalion can regenerate units when out of combat. Cost: 200
Orc Overseer - If paired with an orc overseer this battalion will gain +50% damage and +50% armor and the ability Crack the Whip
Orc pikemen are an early game add-on to the orc warriors. They are used to counter enemy cavalry or monsters. They mustn't be mass produced; instead the player must focus on reaching long-term goals. A good tactic is to have a couple in reserve to in case enemy monsters or cavalry show up. Like all orcs they can be boosted with multiple leadership effects or simply helped by rebuffing the adversary such as with: Tainted Land, Eye of Sauron, Dread Visage or Might of the Damned, which boost their utility. During late-game they must be traded for other types of pikemen such as Dol Guldur Pikemen or Morgul Pikemen since they have additional boosts. It is recommended not to make too many of them as they cost 300 and can still be easily trampled by Rohirrim without sustaining more damage when not in porcupine formation.
